About MEMI

MEMI (매미) is a guitarist and singer-songwriter from Seoul. She spent the 2010s playing lead guitar in the indie rock band 24Hours, and in 2016 started a second band, Seoulmoon, with Lee Ruri and Shin Hye-mi. Her first solo single, "Hate U", came out in May 2022. The debut EP M3MI followed in December 2023, with her first solo show at CJ azit in Seoul two weeks later, and a second EP, Paranoia // Nostalgia, in June 2025. In April 2026 she signed with DayOneDream and released "BADidea" the same month. She built her audience by posting guitar videos. She has more than 850,000 followers across Instagram and TikTok, and Fred Durst, Phoenix, Oli Sykes of Bring Me The Horizon and Good Charlotte have all commented on or shared her clips. "Guitar Pick" has passed two million streams on Spotify. In 2024 she played SXSW in Austin, Incheon Pentaport, BIGSOUND in Brisbane, the Sydney Fringe, Clockenflap in Hong Kong and FireBall Fest in Taiwan. She started playing at 16 on a Fender her uncle gave her, and the first song she learned was Avril Lavigne's "Sk8er Boi". Lessons at a studio full of metal players got her into blues, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin. Her own songs go back to what she grew up on: pop-punk, emo, nu-metal and early-2000s alternative rock.

  • Saw Avril Lavigne play in Korea when she was 18, and still remembers her playing "Girlfriend".
  • Studied music at university with guitar as her main instrument. Says she cares more about feel than technique.
  • Has eight guitars in her room, including the Fender from her uncle.
  • Prefers vintage guitars. Says you can feel the difference when you touch them.
  • Made her US debut at SXSW in March 2024, on the FRIENDS:FOREVER showcase.
  • Played LaLaLa Fest in Jakarta in 2025 and Springwave in Taichung in 2026.
  • Does her own production, videos, artwork and content planning.
  • Emo kid at heart. Goes round music shops looking for the next guitar.
